Christmas Challenge | Day 5 : Rimmel London Royal Gloss in 301 Moreish

I have to apologise for the super late Lipstick Challenge posts (as I forgot to do so in the last post) but I accidently stepped on my SD card to USB converter yesterday when I was in a sick haze, so wasn’t able to put up my blog posts pictures up on time.

I would like to say that I’ve picked up a new converter but I would be lying. I’m currently uploading my pictures to my blog from my SD card, through my iPad, which as you can imagine takes a bit of time.

Today I’ve been hanging about on my bed, wearing my new thigh high boots in a small effort to distract myself from the alarming growth of my used tissue pile beside my bed (I think it’s alive!!!). Continuing on with my lipgloss and balms sick phase I am taking a Royal option and slapping on some Rimmel London Royal Jelly Gloss in Moreish 301.
The Royal Gloss in Moreish 301 is a bright pink, non-sticky gloss that has a very sheer finish so while it does look candy-floss pink it does not carry this pigmented shade to the lips. It comes with a doe foot applicator for easy use.
I’m not sure I could honestly comment on what the wear time of this is because I keep licking it off because it smells SO GOOD!!! It obviously doesn’t taste as good as it smells and is probably targeted at pre-teens but it is making me feel jus that little bit more bubbly and princess-like.
I’m really trying to make an effort to keep posting which will hopefully be much easier once I convince my mum to help me buy a new converter over the weekend (sick ladies can’t battle -1 degree weather) Don’t forget you can keep up to track with both Ysis’ 30 lipstick in 30 days – Christmas challenge over at Le Beauty Girl or click my header to keep track of my version of the Lipstick Challenge

Christmas Challenge | Day 4: Albertha's Garden Chocolate Flavour Lipbalm

Even though I’ve been really sick and finding zero motivation to do anything except blow my nose. I have been trying to keep up to track with the 30 lipsticks in 30 days, Christmas Challenge but I have been making full use of my lipbalms as I do want my lips to be moisturized but I don’t want to chance covering my pillows in lipstick.
Today’s lipbalm is courtesy of Albertha's Garden, which is a new family owned UK business, incorporating the goodness of Grenada’s Almonds into natural, Lanolin, SLS and Paraben Free cosmetics.
The Albertha's Garden Chocolate Flavour lipbalm is made with a blend of Olive, Sweet Almond Oil, Beeswax and Shea butter, which is a very simple ingredient list no matter which way you think about it.
I am a bit anxious over this product as I am allergic to honey, so the beeswax ingredient makes me a little scared (bees=wax=honey). I am going to review more of their range later on in the week when I'm feeling a bit better so check back soon.
Sorry about the sporadic posting, I'm trying to get better through an intensive Lemsip routine ? Don’t forget you can keep up to track with both Ysis’ 30 lipstick in 30 days – Christmas challenge over at Le Beauty Girl or click my header to  keep track of my version of the Lipstick Challenge

I went back and bought more . . .

Hi my lovelies,

I went back to H&M and bought even MORE stuff from the Anna Dello Russo Collection at H&M (Let's be honest, the price was too good!!!). I managed to pick up the thigh high boots (which look almost crotch high on my 34 inch legs) and also the alligator cuff necklace because it looks amazing!!!!
I also picked up a few extra necklaces that I am going to be putting up on ebay for the ladies who would love to get involved with the bargain but can't make it to London.

I have 4 necklaces to sell at the moment with a starting price of £5 (because thats what I bought it for and I'm not going to cheat anyone here). If I make any money on top of that well that would be great because I will classify that as compensation as I did brave crappy London weather and Oxford Circus at peak time to get it. Everything will go up by tomorrow evening so be patient with me.

Emerald Green & Gold Alligator Necklace

I will post by record mail both UK and International.

Let me know if there is something you are desperate to get your mitts on (like the boots or bracelets) and I will go back to the store and get these for you.

Christmas Challenge | Day 3: Dr Lipp Nipple Balm for Lips

So I’m off to a work convention today . . . yes I’m dragging my very sick self out of my house and into a big room filled with healthy people so I can infect them as well. My evil genius tendencies are certainly coming out loool

I don’t really think I can deal with lipstick or gloss today as I cant bear just thinking having to keep reapplying it al day so I’m taking the easy way out and using only my Dr Lipp Nipple Balm for Lips Balm.
I know I recently reviewed this on this blog (click here to read the original review) so you know I already quite like this and I find this cute little squezzy container perfectly made for your handbag or coat (which is where mine lives . . . in easy reach) so I’m not really going to repeat myself again because it will be boring for both you AND me.

It is a very cold day today so I’m thinking skipping lipstick for a lip balm would probably work in my favour.

How do you cope with being ill and still wearing makeup? Do you take it back to the basics or just skip it entirely? Don’t forget you can keep up to track with both Ysis’ 30 lipstick in 30 days – Christmas challenge over at Le Beauty Girl or click my header to  keep track of my version of the Lipstick Challenge

Christmas Challenge | Day 2 - YSL Rouge Volupte in Soft Beige 25

I know I wore a nude lipstick just yesterday so it might seem a bit redundant to be post about another nude lipstick but I was wearing YSL Rouge Volupte in 25 – Soft Beige, for my haul video which I filmed today despite being very sick and it’s the only shade I wore.
The YSL Rouge Volupte range is the luxurious version on the Revlon lip butters and comes in a beautiful metallic gold tub with a handy little mirror at the bottom *All the better to see you my dear*
I love that the lipstick shade is just so pink and soft, so I find myself regularly reaching for this (hence why this now has a lips-shaped imprint) as it is very low effort for me once I pop on my favourite nude lipliner MAC Cork underneath it.
The YSL Rouge Volupte range is very moisturizing (Winter Friendly) but the wear time is ridiculously short. I don’t think you could get more than 3 hours out of this lipstick if you are lucky so you have to reply but that’s not really an issue for me because as long as my lips are feeling soft rather than dry and flaky . . . then I’m one happy blogger.
Here's the video where I'm wearing Soft Beige

Have you tried any of the YSL Rouge Volupte Lipsticks before? How did you get on with them? Don’t forget you can keep up to track with both Ysis’ 30 lipstick in 30 days – Christmas challenge over at Le Beauty Girl or click my header to  keep track of my version of the Lipstick Challenge

Anna Dello Russo at H&M Haul

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit sick at the moment with a some very odd 'frog in my throat' side effects to my blog posts for the next week are going to be very sparse as I will be balancing being sick and still going to work, so all my extra energy is devoted to being in my bed sipping lemsip or herbal tea.

To tide you over the next week, here's a haul video filmed TODAY for a shopping trip that took place YESTERDAY.
I was going to do a Know Your Ingredient Post today but the words kept floating around on my laptop and I gave up but hope you like this video!

Scroll for more pictures on the haul products

Let’s Compare: Moroccan Oil vs. Organic Root Stimulation Hair Mayonnaise.

All hair types need a regular deep conditioning product to revitalize, strengthen, repair and keep everyday damage to a minimum. Seeing as I’ve just bought the Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask (I caved in to the blogger hype), which is a high performance, intensive hair mask with an argan rich formulation that is designed to improve hair texture, elasticity and shine, and truthfully I wanted to see how it compared to my usual protein hair mask, Organic Root Stimulation’s Hair Mayonnaise.

Price

The Moroccan Oil cost £22.60 for 250ml while the ORS Conditioner cost £4.99 for 500ml . . .I don’t think you have to be a mathematical genius to know which one wins this round.

Lets be honest I could buy almost 2 litres of the ORS conditioner and bathe in it for what the Moroccan Oil Masque cost me.

Packaging

Hands down the MoroccanOil wins this round.

It’s rich turquoise container just screams ocean and tropics to me. Just love it!!!! The ORS conditioner is a lot plainer in clear plastic with an emerald green cover but seeing as it is 4 times cheaper than the Moroccanoil Hair Mask, I will let it for not being aesthetically pleasing.

Ingredients

The Ingredient list for the ORS is sooooo much longer than the Morocannoil, I couldn’t even manage to get a good snap of it because it seems to twist around the container like a maze. Both of these conditioners are dimethicone and glycerin based with ORS listing glycerin as its second ingredient.
Morocannoil is Argan Oil and Linseed based while ORS contains Egg protein, Wheat germ oil, Lanolin oil, Olive oil and propylene glycol (humecant). I think both the ingredient lists conveys that the ORS is a lot more intensive than the Moraccanoil but it is NOT a daily or bi-weekly conditioner.

Use

The Hair Mayonnaise is much, MUCH thicker and heavier than the Moraconoil but the Moracconoil leaves hair feeling lighter and energized without the slippery weird down feeling the ORS can sometimes leave my hair with.  I feel that I used a lot more of the Morcanoil Hair Mask when I used it as an intensive mask compared with the Hair Mayonnaise so although it is lighter than the ORS and could probably be used once a week, I doubt it would keep up with my routine and I would have to make repurchases often.

Personal Opinion

Personally I love both these products. I find that I use less of the Moroccan Oil than the  ORS, which means that it does last a little bit longer than the ORS Hair Mayonnaise and I am less tempted to give my hair a protein overload. The main question I have to ask myself is; knowing how often I wash my hair and live on conditioners, would I actively repurchase the Moroccan Oil Treatment when the Hair Mayonnaise works just as well and can obtained easier and cheaper? I would say yes and no. NO for everyday use but YES for special occasions and when I either need a post-night out pick me up or just feel like pampering myself.

Which one do you feel should have won the comparison? Do you think I would have rated the ORS Hair Mayonniase higher than the Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask if I hadn't been using it for years and years?

Christmas Challenge | Day 1: MAC Amplified Lipstick in Half ‘N’ Half

Yesterday, Ysis from Le Beauty Girl kicked off her Christmas Challenge '30 lipsticks in 30 days' ; which involves posting a review on  a lipstick or lip product every day until Xmas, and asked me to get involved (and I really can't resist getting involved with some project or another). As her challenge started yesterday, making me a day behind, I am going to post 2 looks on saturday to catch up (as I'm going to a party so my daytime look and nighttime look will be different).

It seems like forever since I reviewed a MAC lipstick and honestly I don’t think I’ve really gone into my local MAC store since the Marilyn Monroe Collection was released last month (know that doesn’t seem like that long ago but for someone who is on first name basis with the MAC Makeup artist it has been a LONG time).I seem to find that with nude lipsticks (well on me anyway) pinky-nude shades work the best and the more warm brown that is thrown in the better. Cool brown lipsticks look HORRIBLE on me and tend to look like I’ve spent some quality time with a powder sugar doughnut but Half & Half is the coolest nude lipstick I own that work for me.
MAC Half ‘N’ Half is an amplified finish, which means that it is very creamy and pigmented so it gives a great colour pay off while gently moisturizing your lips. I honestly feel that with amplified lipstick you don’t HAVE to wear a gloss over it.
Now I’ve worn Half ‘N’ Half with a skintone-shade lip pencil (MAC Cork) as my lips are slightly pigmented and nude lipstick don’t look great with out an even base but this is a very true refelection of how this shade looks
Tune back tomorrow to see what lipstick, I pull out of the works . . .I think I'm going to add a tab to my header for you to keep track but be sure to check back with Ysis to see all her lipstick reviews

My Current Every Day Makeup Routine

Rounding up this week is another Makeup Routine Tutorial!! Yaaaaay!!

As my tripod and recording space hasn’t been disturbed since my Kelly Rowland Inspired Makeup Video on Wednesday (and I will hurt anyone who moves anything . . .took me 2 hours to get the camera position just right), I thought I should wake up a bit early and record my everyday makeup routine.

Although I’m wearing contacts in this video, I normally wear very large, prescribed, geek glasses so I do makeup to compliment my glasses. I don’t wear mascara on a daily basis as Mascara stains on glasses annoy me to bits and also I highlight my under eyes like crazy because my glasses can ENLARGE under eye circles like nobody’s business.

Know Your Ingredients | Glycerin

I just want to start off with saying a big, fat THANK YOU to everyone for the response I've received so far regarding my 'Know Your Ingredients' series. Today's post will be on Glycerin, which is a very VERY popular ingredient used in the UK in almost every skincare or haircare product. Glycerin is a humectant ingredient that can be derived synthetically in a laboratory or naturally from fermented sugars and animal fats. There is concern over the use of synthetically derived glycerin as petrochemicals are used to creation the reaction that causes glycerin and petrochemicals have been shown in recent reports to cause health risks.

Glycerin/Glycerol/Glycerine is used A LOT in skincare and especially haircare products. I think this is the ingredient that pops up the most in my cosmetics and hair care stash; I just can’t get away from it!! Using glycerin is a great way to condition dry/flaky scalps, frizzy and brittle hair, I love using glycerin products like Moroccanoil’s Intense Hydrating Mask on my hair as it is chemically straighten and products with glycerin increase the moisture content in my hair AND prevents breakage.

The biggest thing to watch out for if your cosmetics routine is glycerin based is that it is VERY WEATHER-DEPENDANT. Glycerin has the ability to draw moisture from the atmosphere, into your hair and skin, and retain said moisture. However this only works effectively in weather conditions with a humidity level of 70% or more. If you live in the UK then it is completely fine to have a glycerin heavy cosmetic routine like I have because London (where I live) has an average humidity level of 79%, making it perfect Glycerin weather. If you happen to live in a particularly dry climate, I wouldn’t recommend you using glycerin products, as you will experience the opposite effect where the glycerin does the reverse and sucks the moisture OUT of your hair and into the atmosphere.

For as long as I can remember my mum adds a little bit of glycerin & rosewater to her moisturizer to seal the moisture into her skin and boost her moisturiser’s skincare properties as she normally got very dry skin during the cold months. I think this is a ridiculously smart idea as the humidity in London rises to 80%-90% from Oct – Feb  (so I would prescribe this trick to anyone who suffers from ridiculously dry skin in the winter).  Just a little dose of Glycerin
helps maintain the skin cell's water balance and improves the general appearance of skin. Hydration does wonders for anyone skin to be honest.

Glycerin is also a very effective preservative often used in medicine (commonly herbal) but if you ever find a shampoo, wash or conditioner using Glycerin as its preservative, PUT IT DOWN!!!! Glycerin is only an effective preservative with an ingredient content of 60% or over and honestly this amount would turn your hair into a big sticky and slimy mess.  The recommended amount of glycerin in a product is about 20% so be wary.

Hope my ‘Know Your Ingredient’ Series has been helpful and informative so far. I love doing the research for each ingredient but do le me know if you want me to touch up on any ingredient you are unsure of.

Kelly Rowland Ice Inspired Makeup Tutorial

I am a HUGE Kelly Rowland.

She was ALWAYS my favourite Destiny Child member and the only reason I even bothered to watch X-factor last year.

The love is that intense!!

Early last week, Kelly Rowland released the video to her latest song 'ICE" and I really loved the smokey black and brown eye that she was wearing in one of the shots. So I decided to record my interpretation of this look.

This is the first time I have recorded a video makeup tutorial from start to finish. I originally wanted to show myself doing my eyebrows but the camera position was so bad that you couldn't see what I was coin very well and it seemed like a waste to include that clip in.

Enough Talking! Watch the Video and let me know what you think.

Know Your Ingredients | Parabens

Parabens are a VERY common, cosmetic ingredient that stops the growth and development of fungus, bacteria and other microbes in makeup. Parabens have long been the ingredient of choice for cosmetic companies as it stops these microbes from growing in moist and warm environment (like your bathroom). The Cosmetic-saavy of you might notice that a lot of beauty and skincare products are popping up with ‘paraben free’ labels, but you might not exactly know (or care) what Parabens are so in today’s 'Know Your Ingredients’ I’m going to do a little recap on the benefits and negative effects of this ingredient so that next time you pick up a shampoo or conditioner from Boots or Superdrug, a quick glance at the ingredient list can reveal the secret effects of the product.

Are Parabens Safe?

See, no one is 100% sure

Parabens occur naturally in certain fruits and spices like blueberries and cinnamon and has almost always been used as a food additive. Many studies indicate that parabens are practically non-toxic. They are go in and out of bodies fairly quickly with minimal skin reactions  (that is unless you happen to  be allergic)

The problem is that synthetic parabens used in cosmetics display estrogenic activity, this means that they mimic the body´s hormones and can interfere with the body’s hormone system when rubbed into the body and absorbed by the skin. Any Scientist worth their weight in Bunsen burners, will tell you that estrogen stimulates breast cancer. This is a KNOWN MEDICAL FACT.

While no studies have successfully been able to prove that parabens cause cancer, many studies do show that parabens can be detected in roughly 90% of breast cancer tumor samples. It has been associated with the rise of breast cancers because parabens (along with other ingredients) are found in deodorants and the majority of breast cancer tumors are found on the upper sides of the breast. So while there is NO DIRECT LINK between parabens and cancer, it is a cause for concern.

Paraben ingredients are always a mouthful to say (and spell) but they almost always end with the word parabens. A few examples of the most common parabens used in Mascaras, Eyeliners and Lotions are:-

  • Methylparaben
  • Ethylparaben,
  • Propylparaben
  • Benzylparaben,
  • Butylparaben
  • Isoobutylparaben

So hope this clears up the your knowledge on parabens. You can check out my previous post on ‘Phenoxyethanol’, which is now used as an alternative to parabens and can be found in many ‘paraben free’ products.

I personally don’t have a problem with parabens as long as it is very low in the product ingredient list, however I will NOT use parabens in deodorants (it’s not worth the risk). How do you feel about using products which contain parabens? Doyou use it moderately or avoid it at all costs?

Know Your Ingredients | Lanolin

So today’s ‘Know Your Ingredients’ is inspired by my favourite lip balm of the moment, which boasts ‘Medical Grade Lanolin’ as it’s main ingredient. I thought it would be a great ingredient as it is a 100% natural ingredient and I didn’t want this series to be all about negative or toxic ingredient you can find in your beauty products but rather a mixture.
Lanolin is taken from sheep's wool as is a yellow wax-like substance that protects sheep from the elements. So for anyone who is against animal-cruelty and for organic/natural products, then you will be happy to know that Lanolin is a renewable, natural substance that is obtained during the sheep sheering process. The Sheep Wool is dunked in how water and boiled for a few hours, Then wool is then taken out and the water kept boiling until it evaporates and what is left is Raw Lanolin.

Now while Lanolin is 100% natural (it's sheep wool wax for goodness sake), it can have some sideeffects. Medical-grade lanolin is non-poisonous and without any skin effects but non-medical grade lanolin can act as an irritant and cause a rash and swelling. I’ve also heard that it can block your intestines from working properly and cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested but . . . I can’t see why you would want to eat Lanolin

So that’s it for this week’s Ingredient Spotlight . . . hope I didn’t gross you out. Apart from Dr. Lipp’s Nipple Balm for Lips and Carmex, what other Lanolin based products have you come across?

A Traffic People Tartan Necessity

I've always had a thing for Vivienne Westwood and anything Vivienne Westwood inspired, so when I came across this cute purse at the Traffic People Boutique in Spitalfields (and found that at £15 it was well in my 'Week before Payday Budget' I knew I had to have it.

It's just amazing!!

It's double sided compartments means that it is large enough to store all of my loyalty cards without having to bulk up several card in one row like I am normally forced to. I really ran into this just in time because the hole in my current wallet just got bigger and I almost lost my bank card the other day

Black Hair Magazine Feature

Thanks to one of my best friends who has a better memory than I do, I found out that a Black Hair Magazine beauty blogger feature which I was included in, had hit the shelves. I honestly don't know why I didn't realise the feature would be coming out in this issue, I knew it would be the xmas issue but I didn't think it would come out til next month.
This was my first magazine feature for my blog (and it turns out I made two appearances) so as you can imagine I drowned my Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with pictures of the post

Anyway I picked up 3 copies, one of which I'm sending to my lil sister in Leicester, and the other I'm going to frame in my room

Yes, you read that right! I'm going to frame this!!!

Anyway go to your local WHSmith and pick up a copy

You Could Be Ruining Your Skin!

A proper skincare routine during the Autumn/Winter months is almost always a priority for me. I might slack off during the summer months as I tend to wear very little makeup (for fear of sweating it all off on the tube) but in the winter months I personally believe that skincare is even more important as how I treat my skin now is reflected in the summer.
I do understand that skincare mistakes happen but once you know what you slip up on or even identify what you are doing that isn’t doing your skin any favours, its easier to make small changes so I’m going to put down what I feel are the BIGGEST and WORST skincare mistakes I’ve come across

Not Taking Off Your Makeup at Night

I think this is probably the most obvious and well known skincare mistake in the beauty world and funnily enough the one I struggle and slip up on the most (see, even the informed make mistakes).
Our skin is covered with pores and pores release a special lubricant designed not only to moisturize and protect our skin at night but to help remove dead skin cells and other irritants from the pores. Leftover
makeup gets into your pores, clogging them up and prevents the lubricant from doing its job, so it just builds up under the makeup and leaves you with a massive pimple.

If you sleep with your makeup on, can you imagine that over the 8 hours you sleep how clogged up your skin becomes?

I take off my makeup every night with cream cleansers, cleansers and toners but sometimes if I’m coming in from a late night out and can’t function very well (for obvious reason) I still wipe my face with a few of my Johnson’s Refreshing Facial Cleansing Wipes.

Oh and of course do wash and cleanse your face in the mornings because you’ve been asleep for 8 hours. Your skin needs it.

Not Moisturizing Your Skin

Personally this is the biggest no, no for me. Coming from an African culture moisturizing your skin was drummed into my head from a very early stage so when I come across people who don’t regularly moisturize, I’m baffled.

I know the guilty parties normally have oily skin, so think that they can skip this step but please, please, please do NOT mistake oily skin for being hydrated skin. If you have oily skin, the biggest mistake you can make is not moisturizing your skin as your body detects the lack of hydration in your skin and your oil glands go into hyper-activity trying to compensate this problem. Not using a moisturizer on oily skin WILL lead to all that excess oil clogging up your skin and can you say, Blackheads, Whiteheads or an acne breakout. If you want to moisturize you skin without add to the shine, get an oil control moisturize like MAC Oil Control Lotion.

Picking at your blemishes

I don’t know where some girls picked up the belief that pop your spots or picking at your blemishes are a good idea but NO, keep your hands at your sides and away from that spot! Picking at your spots or blemishes doesn’t help your skin in the long run, in-fact it makes it worse. Picking at it actually allows the bacteria to spread and you will find that your one spot has gone and invited it’s family to visit.

Using Dirty Makeup Brushes

*faints at the thought*

Personally this is the biggest no, no for me. I’m not a violent person but I will slap someone who tried to use a dirty makeup brush on me because it’s exactly that . . . DIRTY! Dirty makeup brushes are a bacterial breeding ground which carry any and everything from old makeup, dirt, dead skin cells, germs, oils and bacteria, and every time you use a dirty makeup brush, you are applying all that nastiness to your skin.

If you have problem skin, highly sensitive skin or acne and use your brushes daily, then I would up this and tell you to wash your brushes daily. If you use MAC Brush Cleaner as part of your daily routine trust me when I say that those extra few moments to do this will make your skin thank you.

I think the minimum you should wash your makeup brushes with shampoo (don’t care what type) is once a week while regularly cleaning it with a brush cleaner. Ok, maybe I’m a bit of a germaphobe using the brush cleaner during the week but please wash your brushes weekly.

Not Exfoliating

Exfoliating should be a part of your skincare routine. I’m not saying that you should use an exfoliator every day as this would just strip your skin but using an exfoliating scrub at least twice a week aids your skin’s ability to remove dead skin cells and dirt from your face. I’ve been using Neutrogena’s Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Daily Scrub for as long as I can remember and while I don’t use it daily it’s not harsh and leaves my skin feeling refreshed at night.

I think these are my biggest skincare peeves or the biggest problems I feel people make with their skincare routine. I hope I didn’t come off like a know-it-all,,I’m really not. I just feel that these are the basis for any successful skincare regime. Let me know any other points you think I should add to it and Oh, what do you slip up on Skincare-wise?
